Disciplinary Literacies Business Terms

Credible

Definition: Capable of being trusted.

Sample Sentence: I found the facts from a credible source.

When/How/Why this term is used: A company has to be credible. Many people rely and trust in a businesses success.

 

Goal

Definition: A desirable point at which an individual or group wants to reach.

Sample Sentence: The goal is to eliminate all hazards in the workplace.

When/How/Why this term is used: New goals must be set constantly in order to stay productive and efficient.

 

Outsourcing

Definition: To obtain goods or services from an outside company or source.

Sample Sentence: The outsourcing has greatly reduced our costs.

When/How/Why this term is used: As in any profession, you want your business to be profitable. Often, companies must outsource resources in order to save money.

 

Rapport

Definition: Having a connection with each other.

Sample Sentence: The two companies were able to obtain a rapport.

When/How/Why this term is used: People within a business must be able to communicate well with each other in order to keep the the workplace running as smoothly as possible.

 

Strategy

Definition: A plan for reaching a certain goal.

Sample Sentence: The company’s new strategy brought them out of debt.

When/How/Why this term is used: Having multiple strategies while approaching a problem in the workplace is key to resolving the issue.

 

Marketing

Definition: Advertising for a company.

Sample Sentence: Marketing this quarter is of the upmost importance.

When/How/Why this term is used: This is a very important aspect of a business. It is the driving force behind expanding your business and making it appealing to customers.

 

Competition

Definition: Having rivalry for similar interests.

Sample Sentence: There is always competition in the marketplace.

When/How/Why this term is used: No matter what company or branch of a company you work in, you will always have competition of some kind. Competition is what keeps prices low for customers.

 

Opportunity

Definition: When you reach favorable circumstances.

Sample Sentence: Given this opportunity, we can greatly improve profit.

When/How/Why this term is used: Opportunities are what businesses thrive on. Without good opportunities, a given company cannot be successful.

 

Balance

Definition: A point at which everything equals out perfectly.

Sample Sentence: You have to find balance in order to get along.

When/How/Why this term is used: Balance is key in any situation including running a business. You have to balance out your time and resources. As a businessman/businesswoman you must balance out friendliness and seriousness while dealing with clients in order to make them comfortable doing business with you.

 

Collaborate

Definition: To work together on a literary work.

Sample Sentence: We have to collaborate on this contract.

When/How/Why this term is used: There are many times in business when you have to work with one another in a joint effort on a writing task such as a report.
